Sugar Land, Texas, during the 1880s was primarily known for its sugar cane plantations and sugar refining operations. The area was initially settled by Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" colonists, but its development as a prominent sugar-producing region began in earnest in the mid-19th century. The Imperial Sugar Company, one of the largest and oldest continuously operating sugar companies in the United States, was established in 1843.
